Viktor Tregubov took up weightlifting in 1977 and rose to the Soviet national team in 1986 after winning his only medal, a bronze in middle-heavyweight, at the Soviet championships. At his first international tournament, the 1987 European Championships, Tregubov won bronze in middle-heavyweight but, due to very strong competition within the Soviet national team, Tregubov’s next international tournament was the 1991 European Championships, where he won silver in the sub-heavyweight class. Tregubov’s most successful international tournaments were the 1992 Olympics and 1993 World Championships, which he won in the sub-heavyweight class and, in the latter tournament, he also set his only two world records, in clean & jerk and in total. Tregubov won a sub-heavyweight silver medal at the 1994 World Championships but, in 1995, he sustained a broken collarbone and a serious head injury and had to quit weightlifting. After finishing his sporting career Tregubov worked as a children’s coach in a sports school in his hometown Shakhty, Rostov Oblast and since 2005 has been a coach-consultant to the Russian national weightlifting team.
