Biography

Aghasi Manukyan was a bantamweight Greco-Roman wrestler who won the 1993 World Championship and then won silver medals at the 1994 and 1995 European Championships. He also won a gold at the 1988 World Cup. Manukyan competed at the 1996 Olympics, but struggled and placed 13th, and retired after those Olympics. He then started a coaching career in Armenia, coaching juniors. He later emigrated to the United States where he coached with Dennis Hall’s club. Hall and Manukyan had become close friends during their competitive careers, frequently training together.

Manukyan started coaching at Northern Michigan University. He left that position to work in the construction industry. Two of Manukyan’s brothers, Mkhitar and Samvel, also competed at the Olympics in wrestling.
