Biography

István Maróthy started wrestling in the colors of Autótaxi in 1958. From 1961, he was a wrestler of Bp. Honvéd, and between 1970 and 1975 of Csepel SC. His first coach was his uncle, the 1948 Olympian László Bakos. In the beginning he competed in the middle and light heavyweight divisions, but he achieved his greatest success in the heavyweight division. As a freestyle wrestler, he won the national championship three times as an individual, and he did the same ten times as a team with Bp. Honvéd SE.

He wrestled in the Hungarian national team between 1968 and 1974. At the European Championships in Sofia in 1969, he finished fourth, and in Lausanne in 1973, seventh. He finished eighth at the 1971 World Championships in Sofia. He participated in the Olympics once, in München in 1972, where he finished unplaced after losing his first two bouts. In 1975, he ended his competitive career and became the coach of the Csepel SC wrestling department, and from 1977 until 2000 he became its head coach. Meanwhile, he was also the coach of the Hungarian freestyle wrestling team in 1983 and 1987.

In 1985, his work was recognized with the title of master trainer. Between 1998 and 2013, he acted as the Vice-President of the Hungarian Wrestlers’ Association. From 2012, he was also a member of the general assembly of the Hungarian Olympic Committee for one term. He was on the mat with the Hungarian wrestlers even at the London Olympics, managing his team as a member of the professional team.
