Biography

Kálmán Sóvári competed in cycling from 1928 to 1930, then switched to wrestling. Between 1930 and 1940 he was a wrestler for Húsos, BSE, Elektromos, then from 1940 to 1944 for MAC, and from 1945 to 1951 for Újpest TE. Between 1935 and 1950 he won the Hungarian championship 11 times in freestyle and four times in Greco-Roman.

Between 1934 and 1950 he was a member of the national team with 18 appearances. He participated at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin where he finished unplaced. Twelve years later, at the 1948 London Olympics, he finished fifth in the freestyle as a welterweight. At the European Championships he finished twice on the podium and won a bronze medal at the 1935 continental championship. The peak of his career was the European Championship in Stockholm in 1946 where he won a silver medal in the 73 kg competition.

He made the butcher’s and butcher’s master’s exam, then graduated from firefighting school, and was a firefighting officer.

His son Kálmán Sóvári jr. was a footballer and played in the national team.
