Biography

Wrestler Giuseppe Bognanni won a flyweight Greco-Roman bronze medal at the 1972 Olympics. His chance of anything better disappeared when he had to withdraw with a calf injury in the sixth minute of his decisive match against the eventual gold medal winner, Bulgaria’s Petar Kirov. Bognanni had also won a bronze medal at the 1969 European Championships in Modena. Domestically, he won three Italian flyweight titles in 1969-70 and 1972.
