Biography

Jigidiin Mönkhbat was a Mongolian wrestler who competed at the 1964, 1968, and 1972 Olympics, winning a silver medal in freestyle middleweight in 1968. He won a freestyle bronze medal at the 1967 World Championships, and also added a bronze at the 1974 Asian Games, that medal coming in Greco-Roman. Jigjidiin won six Naadam Champinoships, the Mongolian traditional wrestling festival, winning in 1963-67 and 1974. His five consecutive Naadam titles has only been achieved by two other Mongolian wrestlers.

Jigjidiin is the father of Hakuhō Shō (né Mönkhbatyn Davaajargal), who gained fame as a sumo wrestler in Japan, reaching the top rank of Yokozuna. He was only the second Mongolian, and fourth non-Japanese, to reach Yokozuna. In 2009 Shō won a record 86 of 90 bouts. In 2015 he won his 33rd top division championship, breaking the long-standing record of Taihō.
