Biography

Enrique Jurado took an early interest in sports and practiced boxing, wrestling and football, but soon concentrated on wrestling. In 1936, he competed in the Bantamweight division of freestyle wrestling but was eliminated after two defeats. At this time, Jurado had already graduated from the United States Naval Academy as a Foreign Midshipman in 1934. After his return to the Philippines, he became a teacher at the Philippine Military Academy and also acted as a wrestling coach. During another lengthy stay in the United States, Jurado earned a master’s degree in metallurgy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Back on the Philippines, he joined the Offshore Patrol of the Coastal Defense force in 1939 as an instructor and officer-in-command. Jurado was involved in the Battle of Bataan during the Japanese invasion of the Philippines in the rank of a Captain. He escaped and joined a guerrilla force on Panay. Later, Jurado was ordered to go to Mindoro, where he was killed by a rival guerrilla band. In the 1990s, a coastal patrol boat of the Philippine Navy was named after Enrique Jurado.
