Biography

Cesare Biagi was an Italian sailing bowman whose career was closely linked to the skipper Franco Pivoli. The pair was not just a sporting association as Biagi was actually Pivoli’s stepfather for over 50 years, having married his mother.

Biagi started sailing in 1960 with the L.N.I. club, but it was in the 1970s in the Tornado class that he achieved his best results alongside Pivoli. In addition to two Italian titles in 1973-74, they won the Hyeres week and were second in the Trophy in 1974, and placed eighth in the 1975 C.O.R.K., the Canadian Olympic-training Regatta, an annual multi-class sailing regatta held off the shores of Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

After a respectable eighth place at the 1976 Montréal Olympics, Biagi remained in competitive sailing, both as a federal coach of the Tornado from 1977-80, and as coach of the Italian C-Class catamaran “Miss Lancia”, which was a challenger to the Little America’s Cup. Biagi, a chemical entrepreneur, also directed the Italian Sailing Federation in 1977-80 and was a member of the Sports Commission chaired by Sergio Gaibisso.
