Biography

Johan Hin was the elder brother of Frans Hin and Cornelis Hin was their father. Johan probably took part in all four races. Four years later he finished fifth in the Monotype Class substituting for his father, who acquired rheumatism.

Johan Hin first joined the Schotenhof Benedictine Monastery at Antwerpen, where he called himself Ansgar. A few years later he returned to Haarlem to become a documentary filmmaker. Amongst others, he worked with Joris Ivens (1898-1989) and Hans Richter (1888-1976). From 1937 his topic was sailing, for example in 4,000 Mijl onder Zeil (4,000 miles under sail). In the meantime, to make a living he was compelled to work in his father’s hosiery mill. Nevertheless, Johan Hin made 25 documentaries through 1949.
