Biography

During the 1920s and 1930s Belgian all-round track and field athlete Sidonia Verschueren won multiple national titles across several different disciplines. Verschueren specialised in the shot put and won her first Belgian title in 1923. She then won six further titles (1924–27, 1931–32), as well as winning titles in the 100 metres (1928, 1930–31), 80 metres hurdles (1930–32), and 83 metres hurdles (1925). She finished on the podium multiple times in other events, including the high jump, long jump, discus throw, and javelin. Verschueren competed in the high jump at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics where she finished 16th with a best clearance of 1.40 metres. She also ran in the 100 metres at the Amsterdam Games but did not advance from the heats. Verschueren also played football, winning the Belgian championship with Ghent Femina, in addition to playing for the national team.
