At high school Bill Kennedy competed in both basketball and track and field, specialising in the high jump in the latter. Kennedy won many medals during his amateur career including becoming the MAAA Dominion Champion in 1920. The same year he also competed in the high jump at the Antwerpen Olympics. In 1925 he earned a medical degree, with him practicing medicine in Montréal until his retirement in 1979.
