Les Wade’s father was an accountant who worked in Tianjin, China in the early 1900s. In 1913 the family moved to Canada where Wade became a track and field athlete who competed in middle-distance events. In 1932 he ran in the 1,500 metres at the Los Angeles Olympics but did not advance from the heats. Two years later he had better luck, finishing sixth in the 1 mile at the 1934 British Empire Games in London. Wade later worked at Cornell University as the administrative aide to the chair of the Department of Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture for 18 years.
