Biography

Despite finishing seventh in his round one heat, Alphonse Yanghat of Congo set an Olympic record by becoming the youngest man to compete in the Olympic 100 metres event, aged 15 years, 119 days, a record that stands as of 2020. Known as a 100 and 200 metre sprinter, he was selected to represent his country a second time as a reserve with the 4x100 metres relay team at the 1976 Montreal Games, but did not start. Not content to participate in just one sport at the elite level, he also played football with CARA Brazzaville and helped them win two Congo Premier League titles (1973 and 1975) and the 1974 African Cup of Championship Clubs, scoring four of the club’s six goals against Ghazl El Mahalla SC in the final.

Personal Best: 100 – 10.4 (1972).
