Biography

Mohamed Abu Sobea had a lengthy career in track athletics, and was runner-up at the Egyptian national championships in the 5000 and 10,000 metres events in 1932. Egypt boycotted the Los Angeles Olympics, however, and thus Abu Sobea would have to wait until 1936 to attend the Games. In the meantime, he became Egyptian champion in those two events in 1933. In Berlin, he was eliminated in round one of the 5000 metres and was also entered in the 1500 metres, but did not start. Back at home, he was national champion in the 5000 metres in 1937, set a national record in the 10,000 meters when winning the title in 1938, and was runner-up again in the 5000 metres in 1939. His feats led him to be selected to represent Egypt in the 5000 metres at the 1940 Summer Olympics, which ended up being cancelled, and he stopped competing prior to the end of World War II.

Personal Best: 5000 – 15:41.6 (1938).
