Biography

East German sprinter Evelin Kaufer was eliminated in the second round of the 100 metres, and won the silver medal at the 1972 München Olympics together with Christina Heinich, Bärbel Struppert and Renate Stecher, when the East German team lost the dramatic final against West Germany on the anchor leg. In the semifinals East Germany had set a world record, which was bettered by West Germany in the final. Kaufer earned her only East German title in 1972, winning the sprint relay indoors. She later married football player Udo Schmuck and worked as a sports teacher in her hometown of Dresden.
