Biography
A hammer thrower, Detlef Gerstenberg had a career best mark of 80.50, set in 1984, and twice placed in the top six at the European Championships, with fourth in 1978 and sixth in 1982. In both those years he was fifth in the year-end World Rankings. Gerstenberg was also fifth at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.
Gerstenberg was educated as a cook and later worked within the Nationale Volkspolizei (national police) in the former GDR. He eventually suffered from alcohol abuse and died from liver cirrhosis in 1993, but the West German press often falsely attributed his liver disease to being caused by steroid abuse in the East German sports programs.
