At the 1972 European Indoors Müller won his only international medal, a bronze in the 400. In 1969, 1970 and 1972 he won East German Championships in the 400, also winning indoors in 1970 and 1972, and with the 4x400 relay in 1966-68, and 1970-71. In 1972 Müller set an indoor world record at 500 metres.
