Biography

Henry Caicedo was a Colombian footballer who played for Deportivo Cali and the national team. Caicedo was regarded as one of the best footballers in South America in the 1970s. Caicedo was spotted by scouts when he was playing on fields in Cali, where he was noted for his speed. He began playing as a professional for Deportivo Cali in 1970, going on to win two league titles with the club. Caicedo played in 288 matches for Cali, scoring 19 goals. From 1973 to 1977 Caicedo played for the Colombian national team in 11 matches. He was part of Colombia’s squad for the 1972 München Olympics, but did not play in any matches. Caicedo played in qualification matches for the 1974 and 1978 FIFA World Cups, and was part of the Colombian team that finished as runners-up at the 1975 Copa América.

After his retirement Caicedo suffered with alcohol and drug problems, but he managed to get through rehab in Cuba in 2000. This impacted his health, however, with him suffering from a stroke a few years before he died.
