The youngest of four brothers, Philip Schoettle enlisted in the US Navy in 1944 and served at Apra Harbor in Guam. Following the war Schoettle graduated from Germantown Academy in Pennsylvania in 1947. One year later he was selected as part of the US field hockey team that went to the Olympics in London. At the Games, however, Schoettle did not play in any matches, with the US team tying for 10th place overall. On his return to the United States he worked as an advertising executive for Time magazine in Philadelphia for almost four decades. Schoettle was a keen sportsman who was a member of the Philadelphia Cricket Club, the Mantoloking Yacht Club, and the Glen Meade Golf Club.
