At first Magdolna Komka did classical ballet and gymnastics, then - under the influence of her older brother - she switched to athletics in 1964. As a high jumper she won the Hungarian championship four times and improved the Hungarian record eight times. She participated in two outdoor (1969 Athens and 1971 Helsinki) and two indoor European Championships (1970 Vienna, 173 cm, 7th place and 1972 Grenoble, 184 cm, 4th place). She took part in two Olympics; in 1968 she finished ninth in Mexico, and four years later finished 23rd in München. Her personal best result was 185 cm (June 10, 1972, in Budapest). Komka competed as an athlete of Salgótarján until 1973, then after an injury she continued for a short time in Budapest Honvéd. After the München Olympics, however, she failed to achieve serious results and decided to retire at the age of 24.
Komka’s second husband was the Olympic champion, two-time silver medalist in the hammer throw Gyula Zsivotzky. Her son Attila Zsivoczky was a three-time Olympian, World Championship bronze, and European Championship silver medalist in the decathlon, and her daughter-in-law Zsivoczky Farkas Györgyi competed in the heptathlon at the Olympics.
Personal Best: HJ – 1.85 (1972).
