Biography

Vilmos Tölgyesi started athletics in high school and won numerous student championship titles in middle-distance and cross-country running. From 1949 onwards Tölgyesi competed for Csepeli Vasas and CsMTK. He won his only senior championship title in 1950 with his affiliation’s 4 x 800 metres relay. During his university studies he won college championship titles in both the 800 and 1,500 metres in 1951. In the same year, he finished third in the 1,500 metres at the World College Championships in Berlin. In 1952 he participated in the Helsinki Olympics where he reached the semi-finals in the 1,500 metres.

In 1953 Tölgyesi earned a degree in chemical engineering from the Budapest University of Technology and was appointed as a university assistant professor. He left Hungary in 1956 and went to the United States via England. He worked as a chemical engineer in his new homeland until his early death in November 1976.
