Biography

Seán Egan was a hammer thrower who learned the event while attending school in Curragh and later Kilkenny City. In 1978 he broke John Lawlor’s Irish record when he threw 65.56 (215-1) to win his first Irish title. He improved that several times over the next few years, finishing with a best mark, and Irish record, of 71.10 (233-3), set in Frankfurt on 1 May 1980. Egan won seven Irish hammer titles, in 1978, 1980-82, 1984, and 1986-87, and was Irish champion with the 56-lb weight in 1992. Egan spent six years in the Army, including serving while competing at the 1980 Olympics. He later became a landscape contractor and part-time wood turner in Kilmacud, Dublin.
