Biography

Cecilia Molinari dominated women’s sprinting in Italy in the 1970s. A 1972 Olympian, she reached the quarter-final of the 100 m in München (running 11.61 in round one, which was the first Italian record recognized by electronic timing, and then 11.63 in the quarter-final). She was also a member of the 4x100 m relay team that did not advance out of the first round. At the 1971 Izmir Mediterranean Games Molinari won gold medals in the 100 m (11.9) and 4x100 m relay (45.6), and a relay bronze four years later in 1975.

Molinari competed for Club Libertas Piacenza from 1969-74 (with a break for school leaving certificate in 1969) and in that time she won 10 Italian titles – six in the 100 m (1968, 1970-74) and four in the 60 m indoor (1970-73). A member of the Italian national team for a decade from 1966-76, Molinari represented Italy internationally 36 times, set numerous national records including the 100 m record of 11.3 in Graz on 25 June 1972.

The daughter of a lawyer, after Molinari retired from competing she became a physical education teacher in Rieti. Amongst her middle school students was 2004 and 2008 Olympian and 2006 European long jump champion Andrew Howe. She married Andrea Milardi (trainer and Italian Athletic Federation official), and had three sons (Alberto, Vittoria and Chiara) who all became coaches in track and field athletics.

Personal Best: 100 m – 11.3 (1972).
