Bettiol won the Venezia back-to-back in 1986-87 and was runner-up at the 1988 New York Marathon and the 1990 London Marathon. He competed at the 1990 European Championships, the 1992 and 1996 Olympics, and three World Championships, and overall, was capped 19 times.
