Biography

Gianni Caldana was a sprinter/jumper who first joined G. A. Padovano, but later moved to Assi Giglio Rosso in Firenze. On 14 July 1936 Caldana set an Italian record of 7.50 in the long jump, but could not duplicate that at the Berlin Olympics, where he finished 12th. The highlight of his career was his silver medal in the 4x100 relay at Berlin. He later helped Italy to a fourth-place relay finish at the 1938 European Championships.

Caldan became a coach after he retired from athletics, leading the 1964 Olympic finalist Sergio Ottolina. He also worked as an athletic trainer, notably with football clubs such as AC Fiorentina, AC Milan and Atalanta Bergamasca.

Personal Bests: 100 – unknown; 110H – 14.7 (1940); LJ – 7.50 (1936).
