Biography

Furio Fusi began practicing athletics at 16 in 1963 for F.G. Savonese but moved in 1967 to Lilion SNIA Varedo (later SNIA Milano). After improving the youth Italian 400 metre record twice in 1966, he was a gold medalist in the 4x400 metres at the 1967 Mediterranean Games, while the following year he competed in his only Olympics, finishing seventh in the relay final in Mexico City. Fusi competed twice at the European Championships, in 1966 in Budapest (400 and 4x400) and in 1969 at Athina (relay only), as well as at the 1970 European Cup. He also appeared at the 1970 Torino Universiade, missing the 400 final by only two tenths. Fusi earned 20 international caps from 1965-71.

Domestically, his apex was in the 400 at the 1970 Roma Nationals when, with a mark of 47.0, he narrowly won over the non-Olympians Claudio Trachelio and Antonio Costa. He also won, between 1967-72, six consecutive national titles in the 4x400m relay with the SA Lilion Snia team.

Personal Best: 400 – 46.9 (1968).
