Biography

An all-round athlete from Verona whose greatest strengths lay in the heavy throws, Albino Pighi was the outstanding Italian in both shot put and discus throw from the mid-1920s to the early 30s. He won six national titles in each event between 1924 and 1932.

Unfortunately, his Olympic appearance in 1924 was a disappointment. He threw well below expectation in the discus and finished behind two other Italians despite being Italian champion with the implement. Likewise, in the pentathlon he was never in contention to qualify for the last two of the five events. Four years later he competed again in the discus but, although more competitive this time, his mark was insufficient to reach the final.

Pighi twice set the national discus record: 43.90 m. on 9 May 1925 at Vicenza and 44.44 (also personal best) on 2 October 1927 at Bologna and was ranked in the world’s top twenty in both years

Personal Best: DT – 44.44 (1927).
