Biography

Paul Tergat was a distance runner who won silver medals in the 10,000 metres at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics. He also finished second in the event at the 1997 and 1999 World Championships and took bronze in the 10K at the 1995 Worlds.

Tergat won the World Cross-Country Championships for five consecutive years, 1995-99, and then finished third in 2000. He was World Half-Marathon Champion in 1999 and 2000.

Tergat later turned to the roads and set a world record of 2-04:55 at the 2003 Berlin Marathon and then won the 2005 New York City Marathon. His other podium finishes at major city marathons were second places at the 2001 and 2002 London Marathon and the 2001 Chicago Marathon.

Personal Bests: 10000 – 26:27.85 (1997); Mara – 2-04:55 (2004).
