For more than a decade track and field athlete Roberto Sánchez dominated in the hurdles in Mexico. Sánchez specialised in the 110 metres hurdles and won nine national titles (1929–32, 1934, 1936–38, 1941). He won gold in the event at the 1935 Central American and Caribbean Games, followed by bronze in the race at the 1938 Games. He also ran in the race at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics but did not advance from the heats. Sánchez was only 36-years-old when he died from lung cancer in September 1946.
