Biography

Piet Ruimers was a Dutch track and field athlete who represented Pro Patria in Rotterdam in the early 1900s. He specialised in racewalking and was selected to compete at the 1908 London Olympics where he took part in the 3,500 metres and 10 miles events. In 1940 Ruimers moved to the island of Texel in the north of the country where he worked at a municipal gas factory. Five years later, however, he was caught up in the Georgian uprising on Texel against the German Army. For the reprisal against the uprising, the German forces picked fourteen random civilians, including Ruimers, who were then executed on the beach.

Personal Bests: 3500W - 16.51.0 (1910); 10 MilesW - 1.31.30 (1908).
