Biography

Nemesio de Guzman was a native of Alaminos in the Pangasinan province on the main island Luzon. Only 18 years old, he won silver in the 400 m at the last Far Eastern Games in Manila. Later, de Guzman preferred the sprint, running 10.5 seconds in the 100 m in 1936 and 1939, tying the national record and ranking seventh in the world in 1939. At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, he was eliminated in the first round of both the 100 m and 200 m. De Guzman still had a season’s best of 10.6 seconds in 1942. When the Pacific theater during World War II reached the Philippines, he served as a lieutenant and was killed in action in 1944.
