South African athlete Johannes Coleman competed in long-distance running and specialised in the marathon. Coleman was selected to compete at the 1936 Berlin Olympics where he finished sixth in his favoured event. Two years later he had the best result of his career when he won gold in the marathon at the 1938 British Empire Games in Sydney, Australia. At the same Games he also ran in the six miles event but was disqualified. Coleman returned to the Olympics after World War II when he finished fourth in the marathon at the 1948 London Games.
