Biography

Danny Hellebuyck did not feature at the 1956 Olympics, but he turned professional in early 1957. Hellebuyck’s first pro bout was in June 1957 against Jacques Herreman, with Herreman winning by decision. Hellebuyck fought as a pro through May 1959, when an eye injury ended his career. He had a professional record of 9 wins and 4 losses, but never fought for any major titles. Most of his professional fights were in Belgium, with one in France and two in the Netherlands. Hellebuyck later opened a tavern that became one of the most popular in Flanders. His son, Eddy Hellebuyck, ran in the 1996 Olympic marathon for Belgium, but later settled in the US and competed for the USA internationally from 2000, making a good living in professional road races.
