Biography

Primarily a hurdler, Swedish track and field athlete Carl-Axel Christiernsson also achieved success in the pentathlon and relay races. Christiernsson won his first national title in 1919 with victory in the pentathlon before going on to specialise in the hurdles. He was the Swedish champion in the 110 metres hurdles three times (1920–22), and a four-time champion in the 400 metres hurdles (1920–22, 1924). From 1921 to 1924 Christiernsson was also the national record holder in the 110 metres hurdles when he ran 15.3 seconds.

Christiernsson competed for Sweden at the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics and the 1924 Paris Olympics. In Antwerpen he finished in fifth place in the 400 metres hurdles and sixth place in the 110 metres hurdles. At the Paris Games he had his best performance at the Olympics when he finished in fourth place in the 110 metres hurdles, just one-tenth of a second outside the medals.

In addition to winning titles in his native country Christiernsson also won titles abroad. In 1921 he was the English AAA champion in the 440 yards hurdles in England. He later went to the United States where he set several indoor records in the 60, 80, and 100 yards hurdles.
