Born in Helsinki in 1883 Sigfrid Jacobsson began to compete in long-distance races for IFK Stockholm in 1909. The following year Jacobsson became the Swedish champion in the marathon with the race being run in an unusual fashion on a circular track that measured 399.10 metres. 28 athletes started the 108-lap race with Jacobsson managing to lap all the other runners and finishing more than 12 minutes ahead of the runner-up. Expectations were high for him when he ran in the marathon at his home Olympics in Stockholm in 1912 but he finished in sixth place.
