Ljungqvist became known in the fight against doping in sport. He served on the IOC Medical Commission beginning in 1980, well before he became an IOC Member. He was President of the Swedish Sports Confederation from 1991-2001, and was a vice-president of the IAAF from 1981-2007, serving as its senior vice-president from 1999-2007.
