Biography

The apex of Mariya Pisareva’s athletics career was 1956. A month before the 1956 Olympics, Pisareva jumped her personal best of 1.70 in Toshkent at the Soviet Olympic trials and was selected for the Soviet Olympic team. At the Olympics, Pisareva cleared 1.67 to win a silver medal. Besides her Olympic silver, Pisareva was Soviet high jump champion in 1955 and won bronzes at the 1951 and 1957 Soviet Championships. She later married Soviet-Latvian discus thrower Oto Grigalka, who competed at the 1952 and 1956 Olympics and 1950 and 1954 European Championships, winning European silver in 1954 and bronze in 1950.
