Biography

Tatyana Providokhina was one of the world’s top female middle-distance runners in the late 1970s. Her best year was 1978, when she won the European 800 title, won Soviet titles in the 800 and 4x800, added a silver in the 4x400 at the Europeans, and set a 1,000 metre world record of 2:30.6. Providokhina also won 800 bronze at the 1980 Olympics and at the Soviet Championships that year. Besides her two Soviet titles she won four bronzes at the nationals. She was also a part of the Soviet 4x800 relay that set a world record of 7:52.4 in 1976. After finishing her sports career, Providokhina worked as a children’s coach in St. Petersburg and later in Stockholm, Sweden.
