Biography

Mike Ryan first competed at the Boston Marathon in 1907, finishing 15th, but in 1908 he placed fourth and was selected for the Olympic Team based on that race. In 1909 he won the East vs. West Pittsburgh Marathon in what was thought to be world record time, but the course was found to be short. He also won the Hamilton Spectator Marathon in 1909, and finished second in the British marathon championship that year. At Boston, he failed to finish in 1909, was fifth in 1910, and ninth in 1911. But in 1912 he won the Boston Marathon, also qualifying him for his second Olympic Team. He ran for the Irish-American AC.
