Biography

Bob Wheeler ran for Duke and made the 1972 USA Olympic team by placing third at the Olympic Trials. Wheeler was a three-time All-American at Duke in 1971-73. He won the 1971 NCAA Indoor 1,000 yards with what was then a collegiate record of 2:07.4. Wheeler twice won the ACC indoor mile championships, won ACC outdoor titles at 880 yards and 1,500 metres, and won two ACC cross-country titles. Wheeler later started a running shoe store that merged into the Foot Locker stores and became quite wealthy as a result. He was inducted into the Duke Sports Hall of Fame in 1989.
