Biography

After the 1932 Olympics Dave Carstens launched an up-and-down professional career, which included a fight against later German IBU World Champion Adolf Heuser in Berlin. In 1933 he was defeated for the South African title by his teammate, Eddie Peirce. Carstens fought professionally from 1932-39, ending with a record of 11 wins, 12 losses, and 2 draws. At the 1932 Los Angeles Games, Carstens was one of the boxers who participated in a special fund raising tournament for the benefit of swimmer Jenny Makaal because her mother had to take out a second home mortgage to finance her daughter’s trip to Los Angeles. In South Africa, he had worked as a diamond cutter.
