Biography

Rudolf Watzl began wrestling in 1904, competing for Wiener Ringsport-Klub. Watzl won two wrestling medals at the 1906 Olympics, with a gold in lightweight Greco-Roman and a bronze in the all-around competition. Watzl served with the Austro-Hungarian Army during World War I. During a counter-offensive that re-captured the Przemysl fortress that had been taken by the Russians, he became ill and was taken prisoner. He died of typhoid fever on 15 August 1915.
