Biography

Baron Melvill van Carnbée came from a noble family (of Irish descent) with a long naval tradition. Following in his forefathers’ footsteps, James rose to be a captain with the Dutch marines. Stationed in the Dutch East Indies, and later Berlin, Melvill van Carnbée became director of the Military Gymnastics School. He was also a board member of the Dutch Amateur Fencing Federation. As a competitive fencer, his career highlight was inclusion in the Dutch squad that was sent to the Intercalated Games in Athens. Eliminated in the individual sabre and épée events, Melvill van Carnbée did place third (out of four) in the team sabre.
