Biography

Johannes Osten was a naval officer, eventually rising to the rank of vice-admiral. He was commander of the naval forces of the Dutch East Indies between 1931 and 1934. In that capacity, he had to deal with the mutiny of HMS De Zeven Provinciën, caused by a strike over lower salaries. The mutiny was ended after ten days by bombing the ship, causing great controversy in the Netherlands and leading to the fall of the Dutch cabinet. During World War II, Osten was a member of the Dutch resistance, and eventually captured by the Germans. He survived, being released when Allied forces liberated his prison camp.
