Biathlete Günter Bartnik came in 15th at the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics in the 20 km. At the 1973 World Championships he won a relay bronze, and as his international high point won a silver in 1974 over 20 km. Domestically, Bartnik claimed East German relay titles in 1971 and 1975 with SC Dynamo Zinnwald. He later regularly competed in senior events.
