Biography

Ray Bateman was the 1980, 1983, and 1984 US doubles luge champ, with Frank Masley. He was a graduate of the University of Vermont, where he played rugby and soccer, and studied economics. Bateman later became an insurance broker, working with his cousin at the Bateman Agency in Somerville, New Jersey. But he was better known in his native Jersey for his hobby, as he was a successful race car driver on local dirt tracks. He also became a top squash player and was a regional champion in New Jersey.
