Harry Campbell attended San Jose State University. He was the 1958-59 All-Service Champion while he was in the Army, and in 1960 won the Western States Championship. At the 1960 Olympics Campbell won two fights before losing in the quarter-finals to Italy’s Sandro Lopopolo, who went on to win a silver medal and a world professional championship. Campbell turned pro shortly after the Olympics, recording 5 wins and 2 losses in a short career. That second loss came on 15 May 1961 when he fought Al Medrano at Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco, losing on points in 10 rounds. Shortly after the fight Campbell lapsed into a coma, and died the next day.
