Biography

Jan Hampel was a Polish ice hockey goaltender who began his career with Stal Katowice before playing for both Start Katowice and Górnik Katowice. With the latter club Hampel won the Polish championship in 1958 and 1965. From 1952 and 1965 he represented the national team in 20 matches, including at the 1952 Oslo Olympics, albeit for only five minutes in the match against Sweden. Tragically Hampel was only 29-years-old when he died of gas poisoning in his apartment in Katowice in December 1962.
