Ice hockey forward Dave Hannan was recruited by the National Hockey League’s Pittsburgh Penguins in 1981 after having spent his younger career with the Levack Huskies (1976-1977), Windsor Spitfires (1977-1978), Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (1978-1980), and Brantford Alexanders (1980-1981). He only played one game with the team that year, however, spending the majority of the season with the American Hockey League’s Erie Blades. From 1982 through 1985 he split each year between the Penguins and the AHL’s Baltimore Slapjacks prior to skating exclusively with the Penguins from 1986 through 1987, at which point he was sent to the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers for the remainder of the 1987-1988 season. It was a great opportunity, as the Oilers took the Stanley Cup that year and Hannan brought home a championship ring when he returned to the Penguins for the 1988-1989 season. From 1989 through 1991 he skated for the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs, but took a leave in the middle of the 1991-1992 season to join Team Canada at the 1992 Winter Olympics. At the tournament he played in eight games, scored three goals, and took home a silver medal, which represented Canada’s first podium finish in Olympic hockey since 1968. By the time he returned from the Olympics a salary dispute with the Leafs had seen him traded to the league’s Buffalo Sabres, with whom he finished out the year and then continued with them until 1996. Another fortuitous trade had him sent to the Colorado Avalanche at the conclusion of the 1995-1996 season and he arrived in time to win his second Stanley Cup championship. He spent the next year with the Ottawa Senators before retiring and, as of 2009, works as a pharmaceutical supplier in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
