Biography

Frank Aydelotte played American football at the 1904 St. Louis Olympics in what is considered a demonstration sport. He played for Indiana University where he majored in English, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. Aydelotte earned a Rhodes Scholarship, studying at Brasenose College, Oxford. He then became an English professor, first at California University of Pennsylvania, then at Vincennes University.

Aydelotte was later American Secretary to the Rhodes Trust from 1918-52. He served as President of Swarthmore College from 1921 to 1940, and then moved to Princeton, New Jersey where he was the director of the Institute for Advanced Study from 1940-47, after having served on the Board of Directors since 1930. During his time in Princeton he oversaw a faculty that included Albert Einstein, Kurt Gödel, and John von Neumann.
